  • UN Sessions – HIV Report, 2007
    Status of the epidemic - As of December 2007, an estimated 33.2 million people worldwide were living with HIV. In 2007, an estimated 2.5 million were newly infected and 2.1 million AIDS deaths occurred.

    HIV Knowledge - 40 per cent of young males (ages 15-24) and 36 per cent of young females had accurate knowledge regarding HIV — still well below the 95 per cent goal. PREVENTION
    The percentage of HIV-infected pregnant women receiving antiretroviral to prevent mother-to-child transmission increased from 14 per cent in 2005 to 34 per cent in 2007.
    Globally, most injecting drug users and men who have sex with men lack meaningful access to HIV-prevention services. Access to Sex workers is sharply limited in many countries.

    HIV Treatment - Antiretroviral coverage rose by 42 per cent in 2007, reaching 3 million people in low and middle-income countries, approximately 30 per cent of those in need. Only 31 per cent of individuals living with HIV and TB co-infection received both antiretroviral and anti-TB drugs in 2007.
    As per the surveys in 11 high-prevalence countries, an estimated 15 per cent of orphans live in households receiving some form of assistance. DISCRIMINATION AND STIGMA
    One third of countries still lack legal protections. While 74 per cent of countries have policies in place to ensure equal access to HIV-related services for vulnerable groups, 57 per cent of these have laws or policies that impede access to HIV services.

    Financing - Funding for HIV-related activities in low-income and middle-income countries reached US$ 10 billion in 2007 — a 12 per cent increase over 2006 and a tenfold increase in less than a decade - Implementation of the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and the Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS Report of the Secretary-General
     

  • Rally taken out in Chennai in support of HIV Bill in Parliament

    Rally HIV bill in ChennaiCHENNAI May 18th 2008: Scores of HIV-infected people, volunteers and students took part in a rally organized as part of the 25th International AIDS Candle Light Memorial Day and Global AIDS Week Action observed here on Sunday. The participants raised slogans demanding that the HIV Bill be passed in Parliament.

    Ms. Supriya Sahu, Project Director, Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society, lit a huge candle before the rally started from near the Kannagi statue on Kamarajar Salai. According to the National AIDS Control Organization, there is a decline in the number of HIV-infected persons in Tamil Nadu. Yet, providing them access to treatment and services remains a challenge with stigma, the lack of awareness and the non-availability of services in some areas Tabling the Bill in Parliament will ensure that HIV-positive people have better access to services, the organizers - INP+ and other civil society organizations in Chennai, said.
